Comments Hi dear Turkels. Though I'm not one yours, Turkel is only my first name, I was very glad to find this web-site after my girlfriend told me about it. I live in Azerbaijan and I'm of Turkish descend, like 90% of all Azerbaijanis (we call ourselves Azeris or Azerbaijani Turks). Even my first name tells about it - Afandiyev ("Effendi" is the Turkish analogue of the word "Sir"). I would also like to talk about the origin of the name, I think "el" part also means "nation", not only "land". And I never liked the "hand" explanation of my name. Is there anybody related to actor Joe Turkel? He had a weird part in "The Shinning". The man has a cult-following, I think he's the most-known Turkel in the world. In my country there is regional tv-channel and magazine called "Turkel", thought they must be unrelated. So Turkel is quite popular name in Azerbaijan, even more than in Turkey. Comments I came to your website in response to your visit to ours (www.turkgenealogy.com). You and I do in fact see eye-to-eye on the Turkish connection of our origins. We TURKs also run into the same denial. I think it stems from a desire to disassociate from a group of people who are viewed as "second-class" in much of Europe. There has to be a degree of irony in this for those who also share a Jewish heritage. We are who we are. We should celebrate it, rather than deny it.

Comments Wow! What an interesting site! My grandmother's maiden name is Turkel. I never knew the origin until now. I am Catholic, so it was really interesting to learn that, if I read correctly, the name began as a Jewish name. I'm still not sure where my family originated from. Hopefully I'll be able to find out some day.

Comments I recently found out that, on my grandmother's side, I'm only 4th generation American from Czech. I'm honestly not sure how my grandmother spelled her maiden name, but I searched a Czech site that did list "Turkl" as a surname. I was told that my greatgrandfather came to America as a little boy from Czech. If anyone has any information on Turkls in Czech, please email me.

Comments I am trying to find any relatives from my father's family who survived the war.He was born in Tarnopol in 1914, youngest of five. Father Hersch,Zvi< mother's maiden name may have been Taub. My grandfather was a tailor. My father went to gymnasium in Lvov, later went to Bordeaux, France for University. Never heard from his family once war broke out. Lived in Portugal until he was able to immigrate to the US. Thank you for reading.

Comments My father, Emanuel came from Tarnopol. Trying to find out what happened to his family. He was not successful in finding any records of them after the war and there is a high probability that all in his family perished. However, I am trying once again. I am happy to have found this link.
