Comments My maiden name was Ada Turkel. My grandfather name was Elix Turkel. He was born in Kirinki, Russia. He married my grandmother serah Rudy. They had 3 children. I am the daughter of Louis Turkel. They came in America in1924. Elix had 7 brothers. All came to America except Joseph who went to Argentina. Any information you have would be helpful. I am interested in finding relatives of the Turkel tribe.

Comments Hello Turkel. I have a comment. yes, Turk-el/Turk-eli=hand of Turk, you are right partially, it may also mean "land". I suspect that originially it can be Turk-eli=land of the Turks.. It is more common and significant for people originated from the land of Turks. we have many examples of (town names etc) where -eli ending changed to be pronounced as -el.

Comments My grandfather, Sam Turkel, came from Kirinki, Russia sometime around the beginning of the 1900's. His father was Charles and his mother was Pauline. Sam had 3 sons. Comments Possibly Martha Turkel is my 4th great grandmother. A Martha Turkel(?) married Samuel Schlecht in Dutchess County(?),New York;maybe her name was Turtel. Is Martha familiar to you? Samuel Schlecht was born in New York in 1787. The Schlecht name was changed to Slaight by some family members, my 3rd great grandfather was Stephen Lawrence Slaight b 1808 to Samuel and Martha.
